Since this annual holiday marks the start of summer, what better way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Delaware than at the beach? From packed to more private, there’s a beach for you. Sink your toes in the sand, catch some rays or waves, indulge in a beach read under an umbrella, float in the surf, or all of the above. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and flip-flops, plus bottled water and a snack if you’re staying a while)!
What’s more, our beaches are lined with unique shops, the best breweries, fabulous restaurants, and great boardwalks where you can shop, sip, savor, and stroll to your heart’s content.
Bringing your four-legged friend? No problem. Our beaches are dog-friendly (see restrictions), and so is our bed and breakfast. Book our Doggie Suite for the ultimate getaway with Fido.
Lewes Memorial Day Parade
One of our favorite Memorial Day events along the Delaware Coast is the annual Memorial Day Day Parade in Lewes. We recommend taking a windows-down-beach-bound cruise to town and check it out. The parade typically begins around 11am, followed by a ceremony at 1pm at the Lewes Pavilion. Check out the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Calendar for this event and many more throughout the year.
Horseshoe Crab and Shorebird Festival
A few days after Memorial Day is the much-anticipated Horseshoe Crab and Shorebird Festival, a longstanding event that draws a large crowd each year, located just a few miles away in downtown Milton.
This all-day celebration features delicious food, live music, creative arts and crafts, interesting exhibits, and kayak rides. What’s more, each year, the festival proceeds benefit a local organization. So, you’ll be helping the local economy and environment while you enjoy your spring getaway! Book your stay with us, and get ready to shop, learn, eat, and play while celebrating horseshoe crabs and migrating shorebirds with the locals.
Delaware Activities Without a Timeline
We understand that you don’t always want to make plans while you’re on vacation, so here are some activities that don’t require you to check your schedule. Do what the locals do and try out a few of these things between those essential summer vacation siestas.
- Take a walk around downtown Rehoboth and peruse the sidewalk sales.
- Meander into a beach side bar for a tasty drink special or menu item.
- On Saturday morning, grab a cup of coffee at Notting Hill Coffee Roastery, then head over to the Historic Lewes Farmers Market to fill up on local honey, farm fresh veggies, and homemade pastries.
- Most importantly, slow down to about 5 mph, both in the car and in your mind. The pace of life is slower in Delaware, where we take our leisurely approach to living seriously.
